Harbour Place Blog – Squats.
Harbour Place has been recently working alongside partners and others to get a number of squats securely shuttered. It can be a challenging process to work through. We made contact with the Council and letting agents for the properties. They then get in touch with the landlord to request funding for the property to be secured. This can take some time to sort out.
In the meantime we work with the people who are using the squats to try and encourage them to engage with us and our night shelter. As well as using our service for more intensive support e.g. address their housing issues, to get benefit claims set up, get access to services to address any health or substance use issues. However, initial engagement can prove difficult when squats often initially appear more attractive than using the night shelter. Most squats can be structurally unsafe as they present many health and safety issues for those using them and staff accessing them on outreach. We would always advise members of the public to stay away and out of squats.
During this round of this work with our partners and others we have secured 3 known squats in the area. We also rely on the public to help us identify any properties or buildings that you may suspect are being used as a squat.
