Hello! It has been a while since our last blog entry. A lot has happened since we last blogged and we will be starting up again to share the experiences we have as Outreach Support Workers at Harbour Place.
We are entering our fourth month of delivering our new Outreach and Night Shelter (365 days a year) Services from the new premises at the Hope Street Centre in Grimsby. The new premises officially opened in September 2018. So far we have registered around 176 (at w/c 21/01/2019) new people to the new service. These are people who are rough sleeping, homeless or at risk of homelessness.
The Team has grown considerably from what it was when we worked from our former smaller Albert Street West premises. It has been challenging in lots of ways as we adapt as a growing and developing charity and get used to new ways of working.
Ultimately our goal is to support rough sleepers and homeless people into their own accommodation, and help them keep it.
We are currently encouraging our Service Users to have a voice in the organisation. We want them to feel a part of the decisions, gather ideas and find out how we can best support them. To do this we have invited people to volunteer to be part of a Service Involvement Group to meet regularly to share any thoughts and ideas they have about the service. We will also speak to people individually who may also wish to give feedback and share their own ideas too.
Currently we are working with about 49 rough sleeping people in North East Lincolnshire. When on outreach in the community we try and engage with people to encourage them to come into the Centre for support.
We are open between the hours of 10 a.m. and 12 noon Monday to Friday where people can ‘drop in’ and register to access our services. We would, however, never turn away a person in need while we are at the centre during opening times. On Monday, Wednesday and Fridays we provide breakfasts and hot drinks to service users. There is also access to showers and basic supplies e.g. clean clothes and toiletries. This also gives us the opportunity to do more intense support work with people to assist with any issues they may have. Such as setting up or dealing with benefit claims, keeping to appointments, signposting and liaising with other agencies, e.g. Addaction, Navigo and the North East Lincolnshire Council’s (NELC) Homelessness Prevention Service.
We hope you find our blogs interesting and informative. We look forward to sharing our experiences with you. Finally we really do appreciate how much individual’s, the community and businesses continue to support us.
